Bios

Liz Weiss, MS, RD

Liz Weiss is an award-winning broadcast journalist and registered dietitian specializing in health, nutrition, and culinary communications. She received her undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Rhode Island, her Master of Science degree in Nutrition Communications from Boston University, and attended the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she completed the Professional Chef’s Program.

For nearly two decades, Liz wrote and reported on nutrition and health for CNN, PBS, The Health Network, Time Life Medical, ABC Boston, Ivanhoe Broadcast News, Medical News Network, and others. Currently, she serves as a contributing editor for Health magazine and writes the monthly column, “Meal Makeover,” for Nick Jr. Family Magazine.

Liz is a sought-after cooking instructor, speaker, and consultant. She has extensive experience as a live television and radio guest. During her career, she has conducted hundreds of live and taped interviews, appearing on NBC’s Today Show, CNN Headline News, CNN Accent Health, the Food Network, FOX News, ABC-Boston, and many more.

She is the co-author of The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time! (Broadway Books, 2004) and co-founder of the free, online “Meal Makeover Moms’ Club” at www.MealMakeoverMoms.com. With co-author, Janice Bissex, Liz conducts “Meal Makeover Mom Cooking Parties” for fellow parents featuring easy strategies and recipes for improving the family diet.

Liz has received numerous awards throughout her career. She was nominated for cable TV’s highly acclaimed ACE Award for Best Educational Series and received the American Heart Association’s Howard Blakeslee Award for health journalism. During her tenure at CNN, the network was honored with the American Dietetic Association’s prestigious President’s Circle Award for nutrition education.

Weiss is a member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the ADA’s Food & Culinary Professionals practice group, and the national organization, Stand for Children. She lives in Lexington, Massachusetts with her husband and two sons, ages 10 and 7.

Janice Newell Bissex, MS, RD

Janice Newell Bissex is a speaker, nutrition consultant, and coauthor of The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time! (Broadway Books, 2004). She received her undergraduate degree in Food & Nutrition from the University of Maine, and her Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Boston University. In addition, she completed culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America, and recently earned a certificate in the Intermediate Wine Program at Boston University.

Her professional experience includes Nutrition Director for the New England Heart Center in Boston, and Sales Manager for a nutrition software company based in San Diego. For four years, Janice was the Nutrition Consultant to the U.S. Senate in Washington, DC, where she worked with U.S. Senators, their spouses, and foodservice personnel. After leaving the Senate, Janice spent ten years at the Boston Harbor Hotel, consulting with the hotel’s award-winning executive chef and counseling clients at the hotel’s health club. There, she created “Food & Wine for Life,” an annual event featuring nutrition seminars and cooking demonstrations.

A resource for local and national media, Janice has appeared on CNN, PBS, New England Cable News, Fox5-DC, Good Day Atlanta, and Boston’s WB56, NBC and ABC stations and conducted dozens of live TV interviews nationwide as part of a media tour surrounding her book launch. The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers was one of three finalists for the 2005 International Association of Culinary Professionals Healthy Cookbook Award, and has been featured in national and local press including Newsweek, The Boston Parents’ Paper, Readers Digest, The Oregonian, The Boston Herald, Parents magazine, and Parenting magazine. Janice has completed numerous radio interviews and is a sought-after speaker for conferences and special events, many of which incorporate cooking demonstrations. She is co-founder of the free online “Meal Makeover Moms’ Club” at www.MealMakeoverMoms.com and writes a monthly column, “Meal Makeover,” for Nick Jr. Family Magazine.

Janice is an active member of the American Dietetic Association, having served in various capacities including President of the Massachusetts Dietetic Association. She currently serves on the Culinary Nutrition Advisory Board at Johnson & Wales University and is a founding member of the Food & Culinary Professionals practice group of the ADA, and a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Janice lives in Melrose, Massachusetts with her husband and two daughters, ages 14 and 7.
