To get you thinking about a grilling “tip,” here are a few to get you started:

  • Pair fruits and vegetables with grilling favorites to reap even more nutrition benefits.  Many people fall short of MyPyramid recommendations for eating 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables daily.  Try pairing our Very Veggie Kebabs with a favorite protein like lean beef, chicken, or fish.
  • Use a spatula to turn burgers and tongs to turn steaks and kabobs. Do not press, flatten or pierce the meat — flavorful juices will be lost that way.
  • Opt for lean, well-trimmed cuts of meat and poultry to prevent fire flare-ups and excess smoke formation
  • Marinate meat for added flavor and tenderness. Marinades with little or no sugar may help protect meat from charring and reduce the formation of potentially carcinogenic compounds.  For best results when using a glaze or sauce that contains sugar, baste during the last few minutes of grilling to obtain the best flavor and avoid burning or charring.

    Our favorite item to grill is avocado. You halve, pit, and peel a ripe avocado. Rub it with olive oil. Grill it long enough to warm through and give some flavor. Then fill the hole from the pit with salsa and top with cheese. Keep on grill until cheese is melted.

    To keep well done hamburgers moist mix 2 slices of bread with enough milk to make a thick paste. Add to ground beef and seasonings and make into patties.

    Also we use a grilling basket for veggies. Just add some olive oil and italian seasoning to your favorite veggies (we love read & green peppers, red onions, zucchini and mushrooms). Yum!

    our favorite grilling side dish is mango salsa. Peel and cube 3 mangos. Add chopped cilantro, red onion, and some lime juice. It is delicious. Serve with chips.

    I love using a special vegetable grilling net when grilling vegetables. It has wholes and prevents vegetables from falling into the grill.

    Try grilling falafel patties instead of frying them. Use a falafel mix or this recipe
    1 28oz chickpeas
    1 egg
    2 tablespoons of flour
    1 cup of parsley
    1 cup of cilantro
    2 teaspoons cumin
    1 teaspoon turmeric
    1 teaspoon slat
    ½ teaspoon black pepper
    Mix everything in a food processor, make patties, put on an oiled grill 2 minutes each side. Enjoy

    I make a simple marinade (equal parts oil, vinegar, soy sauce with some sort of seasoning and garlic) for the meat and veggies. I have my hubby grill up a bunch of food (a couple of rounds) to use during the week for enchiladas, fajita salads, sandwiches, etc. I continue to prep for other meals while he grills: rinse and shred lettuce for salads, shred cheese, chop up non-grilling veggies, thaw a few pesto ice cubes, make a dressing, etc. Work once: enjoy all week!

    one of are favorite are to put potatoes and Zucchini ,bell peppers
    and tomatoes and lots of butter and salt and pepper and
    Italian seasoning then we rap this all in aluminum foil and put it on the grill .
    Another one is I like to take a whole chicken and set it on a coke can half full of coke let it cook tell done the coke makes the chicken real most . Boy is it good

    Our summer favorite is to marinate a flank steak in a mixture of 1part Zesty Italian Dressing and 2 parts Ketchup. Place the steak & the marinade in a large Ziptop bag and marinate for anywhere from 30 min to several hours… Grill 7 minutes on each side over a medium hot grill for medium-rare. Slice on the bias and serve with baked potatoes (can also be done on the grill *just par bake them in the microwave* and a crisp salad with some more of that Zesty Italian Dressing. It’s funny– people always think we’ve gone out of our way to make them a great meal, when it’s sooo easy.

    We love grilling chicken breasts and pineapple rounds. They taste delicious together and it’s a great way to get that extra serving of fruit!

    We LOVE zucchini and eggplant on the grill we brush them with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and sprinkle with some garlic powder – so yummy!! Salmon on the grill is another family favorite!

    I marinate chunks of beef for kabobs in Caesar dressing, then slide them on the skewers with green and red peppers, mushrooms and onions. Grill them about 11 minutes total, turning them with tongs periodically so they’re cooked on all sides. Yum!

    Marinate!!! I love trying new recipes… for liquid marinade, spices and rubs… it is so easy to prepare right after dinner, while I am already in the kitchen cleaning up, pop it in the fridge and let it marinate for about 22 hours til the next evening. Yummm… so tender!

    When you grill vegetables, make extra for another meal. The leftovers are great when tossed with some crumbled feta and cold brown rice, quinoa or couscous and dressed with vinaigrette for a quick but filling salad. We like red onion slices, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers and asparagus.

    Some of my favorites have already been mentioned. Chicken with pineapple [chicken dredged and marinated in paprika, a little beer, and lots of lime or lemon], eggplant with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and asparagus.

    One of our standbys is carne asada [super thin roast that’s been marinated in a paprika based seasoning], grilled, cut into small pieces, then served with guacamole, pico de gallo, and a dusting of cheese in corn tortillas.

    Grilled corn – just put it on the grill with husks and all. It cooks and steams. It is easier to peel when it is finished (about 20 minutes). Pull back the husks, the silk comes right off, and tie a little husk-tie around the “tail” for a ready made handle. Yummy for all!

    My tip for grilling is:
    Always choose tongs to turn the meat instead of a fork. A fork pokes holes in the meat and allows the natural juices to be released, which causes the meat to lose flavor and become chewy. Also, when making burgers, dont be tempted to flatten them out, again for the same reason. One last tip, when cooking meat, allow it to rest for around 5 minutes to give the meat time to reabsorb its juices. (just place the cooked meat on a platter and cover lightly with foil.)

    Always try to use a cooking spray on the grill side before placing it on the grill to ensure that you can get the meal off the grill and help with the cooking of it. I use PAM Grilling. By the way, I’m a member of the newsletter group.

    My family always grill pineapples. It’s really good! Just slice them and place them around the edge of the grill. You won’t be disappointed 🙂 Grilled shrimp is also great. Peel, devein, marinate in an olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic sauce, and just toss them on the grill. Delicious!

    Kebab grilling baskets are my new experiment!
    I love chicken and veggies that I marinate overnight and then grill.
    Any extras are excellent for a cold salad the next day.

    I also always use a wire brush to scrape down my grill when it is still hot then rub with canola oil to prevent sticking.

    We love to put zucchini/squash and onions (really any veggies) in foil. We put a little olive oil on top and season with pepper and salt or other seasoning. Thow it on the grill and 1/2 hour to 45 minutes later you have a great veggie side.

    I too love grilling corn, but in a house where we have a serious love of burgers, that is what I really get excited about. We have a few faves, one is a super lean beef burger with a local steak sauce to keep it moist, one a turkey burger with greek flavors, and the third, and for me the best because it gets my kids to eat a vegetable they don’t know about, the MMM cheesy black bean burgers. YUM and they make a ton of leftovers!

    Our favorite grilling recipe is Grilled Tri Tip Roast. Tri Tip is so tasty and my husband grills it to perfection. We usually buy our roast at a local grocery store, but recently I purchased a Southwest seasoned roast at Trader Joes – it was heavenly! Cooking the roast is a series of cooking for 8 minutes and rotating 180 degrees – so 8 minutes, rotate, 8 minutes, flip, 8 minutes rotate, 8 minutes done!

    My favorite thing to grill right now is potatos. I cut them into thick steak fries, brush with olive oil and season salt then toss them on the grill. They only take about 3-5 minutes per side and a crispy and delicous! My husband loves to do burgers & fries this way as much as possible during the summer!

    My latest favorite thing to grill is pork tenderloin! I marinade the whole piece in either Italian dressing, or my own simple mix of olive oil, vinegar & whatever I grab out of my spice cabinet. The pork takes only about 15-20 minutes on the grill and is absolutely delicious! I don’t think I will make it any other way from now on!

    We have been grilling a lot of baby potatoes this summer. I precook a little, then skewer them with onions and peppers. A little olive oil and your seasoning of choice (I usually use salt, pepper and thyme) and then put them on the grill. Delicious!

    Last year we put in a garden for the first time at this home. I requested zucchini, but my husband was giving me a hard time because HE doesn’t like it! Well….last summer I convinced him to put in 4 zucchini plants, and after introducing him to grilled zucchini, this year he put in TWELVE PLANTS!!!! (yes, it is a little much, but I have gotten quite creative!) Our favorite way to grill them is:

    take one large zucchini and cut it lengthwise. Then slice into 1/2 inch ‘steaks’. Lay them on a platter and sprinkle with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, onion powder and garlic powder. Marinate for about 1/2 hour (if you let the marinade sit too long, the zucchini may get mushy!) put on a hot grill, get those great char marks and wah-lah!

    I have also used the leftovers (not that there are many!) to add an additional layer to my traditional lasagna!!!

    My favorite thing to grill in the summer is fresh veggies. I put a generous mix of brocoli, cauliflower,pea pods, carrots, red and yellow peppers, mushrooms and what ever else I can think of in foil with olive oil, seasonings, garlic and freshly ground pepper. it is delicious!

    My family loves packet potatoes. I slice up potatoes-washed but not skinned, some onion and mix with Canola oil and Tastefully Simple seasoned salt. Then I take several sheets of foil, spray w/ Pam and divide the potatoes and onions among them. Wrap them up-leaving some room at the top but tightly seal. Then pop on the grill for about 20-25 minutes, turning several times. Serve.

    I love to make potato & Veggie foilpacks on the grill. The key is to use plenty of onions, w/ sliced potatoes and butter or olive oil, and salt & pepper. You can also add any of the following….peeled cloves of garlic, sliced yellow squash and/or zucchini, sliced or chunks of carrots, brocolli and/or cauliflower. You can alos add peppers. Any and all of these are delicious!! Just used a large peice of heavy duty foil and fold over then fold the sides together. Fold over mutiple times. Throw 1 or more packs on the grill for about 1/2 hour…turning 3 or for times. Delish!

    I tried grilling asparagus wrapped in bacon the other day…yummy! Snap tough ends off, drizzle in olive oil, coat in salt and pepper, wrap 5-8 stalks per bacon strip and grill till tender (about 10-12 minutes) turning frequently.

    Easy veggies on the grill, marinate quartered summer squash, mushrooms, bell pepper halves, and thick onion slices in your favorite italian dressing for at least half an hour. Grill for 3-10 minutes a side until tender.
    These are a staple of our summer grilling season.

  38. Our favorite london broil grill marinade-

    1/3 cup olive oil
    2 TBS ketchup
    2 TBS soy sauce (reduced sodium)
    2 TBS worcestershire sauce
    2 cloves of grated garlic

    The trick to amazing london broil is grill on high heat for 5 minutes each side (only flip it once) and then take it off the grill and put in dish you are going to cut it on and cover with foil for 10 minutes before slicing it! Just look at this meat!

    I wrap Zucchini, yellow squash sliced, with baby carrots and sliced onion in tin foil. Add a little water (no more than 1/4 cup), Smart balance butter and spices. I use dill, majoriam, Tyme and Chervil (when I can find it). Cook on the grill until veggies are tender about 20-30 min.

    I love grilled zucchini and yellow squash, just cut in thick diagonal slices, brush with olive oil grill for a few minutes each side and its a tasty change to summertime goodies. Vidalia and Red onions and corn on the cob are delish grilled also. And fish is a nice grilling alternative, just be careful as it can overcook easily if not timed just right

    Our fave summer treat on the grill is OKRA! Fresh okra from the farmer’s market…get some pods that aren’t too small or overly big. Wash them, pat them dry, then toss them in olive oil (or grapeseed…lighter flavor) and then some fresh ground black pepper and sea salt sprinkled on for good measure. Grill over medium heat until they are tender. Absolutely yummy! Our boys, ages 4 and 8, both love okra that way!

    One of my favorite healthy grilling recipes is Grilled Halibut and Pineapple, which I found on the Weight Watchers website at The pineapple is marinated with brown sugar and ginger first and is so sweet and delicious. A perfect compliment to the halibut.

    Our favorite it to cube potatoes (white and sweet) with a chopped onion and green pepper, dash of seasoned salt and a little drizzle of olive oil. Wrap in foil and grill–delicious!

    I came across this grilled meat rub recipe on the Debt-Proof Living website recently which is both tasty and allows you to use spices you probably already have on hand. Press the spice mix on the meat of your choiceand least a half hour, then grill to taste. Here is the recipe for the rub, which makes 2/3 cup and is for 4 lbs. of meat and which you can use on chicken, beef, pork or fish.

    1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
    1 tablespoon kosher salt
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    1 tablespoon paprika
    2 teaspoons garlic powder
    2 teaspoons onion powder
    1 teaspoon cumin
    1 teaspoon oregano

    I used sirloin steak last time I made this and my family loved it!

    We like our burgers with dried onions, salt, pepper, chili powder and dashes of soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. When combined with grass-fed organic ground beef, the burgers grill up nice and tasty.

    Sorry I have not really done much grilling…..maybe if I had the new tools and the steaks, it would inspire me more. When I was married, my husband grilled and it really helped when I was doing weight watchers. I love squash on the grill. I have used the little Forman’s grill indoors.We liked to do hotdogs on them when my son was still here.

    I love grilling marinated steak tips with grilled zucchini fresh from the farmer’s market and some crusty bread. Just sprinkle a little olive oil, minced garlic and sea salt over some crusty French bread, wrap in foil and grill…delicious!

    We love grilling any vegetables with just a little olive oil and sea salt. It really brings out the flavor! Also, I highly recommend that all husbands get a Big Green Egg. It’s highly addictive, so they end up grilling most meals!! It makes dinner much easier on a busy Mom!

    Besides all kinds of veggies on the grill one other thing we really like to cook on the grill is pizza. This was something we used to only make in the cooler months since it heats up the kitchen. No problem making this on the grill. Just have to roll out the dough before putting on the grill, brush olive oil on then flip after a couple minutes, and brush a little more olive oil on and put all your toppings on. Only thing is to make sure that whatever you put on will heat up in only a few minutes….making pizza on the grill is a lot faster than in the oven. We like a soft cheese like goat or fresh mozzarella with basil from the garden.

    We grill several times a week here in the TX heat in summer. Our favorites are beer can chicken. We also have a rotisserie on the grill and a turkey breast is always great too!

    I love grilling chicken with a citrus marinade. I get grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes and the citrus juice with some beer, salt, pepper, cilantro, garlic powder, onion pwder and marinade it overnight. Grill it up and it;s delish.

    My family’s favorite recipe is grilled salmon with a dijon mustard sauce.

    Marinade for about 2 lbs salmon for no more than 2 hours:
    1/2 cup canola oil
    1/4 cup lite soy sauce
    2 Tbs dijon mustard
    1 Tbs cider vinegar
    1/4 tsp lemon juice
    freshly minced garlic – 2 to 3 cloves
    pinch of black pepper

    2 Tbs dijon mustard
    1 Tbs white vinegar
    pinch of sugar
    pinch of white pepper
    slowly pour in while stirring 1/2 canola oil

    Serve grilled salmon with sauce.

    When grilling chicken and beef we freeze the chicken after seasoning it then grill so it is not overcooked and dried out.

    We love to grill veggies but also fruit. Yep pineapple and of course apples with butter and brown sugar. But a recent favorite is bananas, its a great way to use over ripe bananas. I just recommend indirect heat. Nothing ends a great grilled dinner like a grilled fruit kabob with yogurt dipping sauce or ice cream.

    We love pizza on the grill. I use just a basic pizza dough recipe, but I use half whole wheat flour and half white. Once the dough has risen, bring your dough and the topping out to the grill. I make 5″ individual pizzas. Grill on one side till it gets golden brown. Flip over and add toppings. Make sure you don’t have any think veggies. They won’t cook in time. Finish cooking. It is yummy!

    I want to learn how to grill veggies better, hubby already LOVES grilling meat of any kind. My advice? Keep an extra propane tank full as a reserve. If you power goes out you can still cook:)

    We love to grill Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs that have been marinated in Italian Dressing. We use them for salads most of the time, if they make it that far! We tend to just eat them right off the plate!

    One of our favorite grill recipes is Marinated Flank Steak:
    1 1/3 lb flank steak (approximate size)
    1/2 c soy sauce (reduced sodium is great)
    1/4 c sherry
    1/4 c red wine vinegar
    2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    1/4 tsp ginger
    1 garlic clove, crushed

    Combine all ingredients in resealable plastic bag and let marinate at least overnight. Grill over medium coals for about 8 minutes per side, depending on your preferred doneness.

    We never have leftovers of this one!

    The best grilling is making homemade kebabs with fresh veggies, cut up steak, marinated in a simple marinade with olive oil, garlic and lime/ citris juice. Keeping it simple makes summer grilling more fun!

    My husband is the one who makes this but it is my favorite fresh summer grilling recipe. He takes a peeled deveined shrimp and puts a basil leaf on it, wraps it in a small piece of bacon and grills it. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I would love some new beef recipes for the grill so PICK ME TO WIN!

  84. GRILLED HONEY DIJON PORK. MmmMmm Good and Healthy too!

    Marinade 4 Boneless Center-cut Pork Chops overnight in a mixture of 2 tbsp. apricot jam, 1 tbsp. Dijon-style mustard,1 tbsp. honey, 1 tbsp. low sodium teriyaki sauce, and 3 large minced garlic cloves.

    Grill over medium-high fire 4 – 5 minute/side while basting with reserved marinade. Cook until no trace of pink remains in middle/160 degrees F.

    Even more delicious when my husband does the prep, grilling, and clean up.

    We LOVE to cook sweet potatoes on the grill-prep & cook just like a baked potato.

    Also, I love to throw any kind of veggies in a foil packet. Add some seasonings or some italian dressing, etc. and throw on the grill. Always good and EASY cleanup! (Leftover veggeis can be thrown on a pizza or sandwich or salad later in the week!)

    My favorite grilling recipe is a super simple one. Just take some good steaks, put them in a ziplock baggie with some olive oil and let sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour or two. Take them out about 30 minutes before you want to grill them. Once the grill is ready, season them liberally with salt and pepper and then grill to your liking. They come out tasting like butter!

    Grilling marinate that I use: yoghurt, coriander, red chilli powder, turmeric, cumin powder, salt. I marinate my veggies with this and then grill after sometime. I like it.

    Another one is simple olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper. Toss veges in this and grill on direct flame using mesh and it turns out great.
