French Fries and Fried Chicken Made with Less Fat … and a Giveaway for a T-fal ActiFry!

This month, we’re giving away a kitchen gadget that’s sure to please every French fry lover and fried chicken fan out there! We were recently given the opportunity to try out an ActiFry appliance from T-fal, and we were super pleased with the results. And now, one lucky blog reader or Facebook fan will have a chance to win one.

We made two recipes in the Acti-Fry. The first was these French fries which called for just one tablespoon of oil. They disappeared quickly.

We made the Real Crispy Fries from the ActiFry cookbook using 1¾ pounds of Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch by 3-inch pieces. We placed them in the unit, drizzled 1 tablespoon of canola oil on top, and then set the time for 30 minutes. Voila. Crispy fries!

We also made fried chicken, inspired by a blog post for Korean Fried Chicken from Pig Pig’s Corner. We used 1½ pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs (cutting each thigh into thirds). We then created a coating with 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 large egg, 2 teaspoons 1% low-fat milk, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. We coated the chicken with the batter, placed it into the ActiFry with 1 tablespoon of canola oil, and then “fried” the chicken for 35 minutes. Dip in ketchup, or create your own sauce with your favorite seasonings.

GIVEAWAY NEWS: We’re all for eating a moderate amount of healthy fats, but adding to much fat to the diet — shortening, butter, and other oils high in saturated fat — can raise cholesterol levels and pack on the calories. This handy kitchen appliance cooks up a wide variety of dishes using just one tablespoon of oil. It works by distributing hot air, which circulates and evenly cooks the food. And now, we’re pleased to be giving one away ($250.00 value).

TO ENTER: Leave a comment here or on Facebook and tell us why you’d love to win an ActiFry and/or why you’re trying to cut back on the fat in your everyday cooking.

We will enter you into the giveaway additional times if you …

  55. Shakti says:

We do not currently deep fry at home because of the mess and hassle. I’ve considered getting a dedicated deep frying appliance, but can’t really conscience that, since one would then have to deep fry EVEN MORE to justify the unitasker, which isn’t healthy. A dedicated, healthier frying appliance would be just the ticket! No muss, no fuss, no heavier us!

However fried foods are a favorite and I think this fryer may just be the key we need to continue on enjoying those foods without all the grease.

  59. Lynn Wiles says:

I don’t ever deep fry…I hate wasting the oil as we don’t want to do it that often. This would allow us to have the feel and flavor of deep frying with the same amount of oil I’d use in anything in a shallow skillet. I have a cast iron dutch oven but it’s too wasteful, messy and time consuming. Good Luck on your new year of business!

With teenages in the house it is always a challenge to find something that appeals to their pallet while fitting within the moderate amount of healthy fats range. It sounds as though ActiFry might be just the ticket to cooking food items appreciated appreciated by all while being beneficial to all family members. The fact that it requires so little oil to cook would presumably mean food items prepared for meals can be held over in the refrigerator for later consumption, without the heavy oily taste some fried foods take on once they are reheated. I’m facinated to see what other potential food preparation options it may offer. Thank you for trying out this item and sharing your feedback! : )

  144. Stephanie says:

We are very health conscious. My kids (all 5 of them) love fried foods, but I rarely make them because of the fat and mess. Looked the ActiFry up online and it looks amazing! 145. Zinky says:

  151. I always see cool recipes that I would like to try, but I don’t like frying. I always try to bake, but that doesn’t turn out the same. The recipe I’m thinking of are mozzarella sticks made with string cheese and wonton wraps. They just don’t turn out as well in the oven.

I have twin 3 year old boys and a 20 month old baby girl and while she will eat anything she can get her hands on, my boys are much more discerning (and by discerning I mean picky). The go to favorites are chicken nuggets and french fries as they will always eat them (and hot dogs). So I don’t feel like the worst mom ever I always bake them. I would love to have another healthy option. Thanks for the giveaway!

  153. Michiel says:

I would love to win the T-Fall fryer because when I was growing up, my job was to make the french fries for dinner. Yes, 10 years old, and cutting up potatoes, and navigating them through the deep fat fryer. You just can’t get a boughten substitute for homemade french fries. I would like to cut more unhealthy fat out of my diet because I want to be able to control what I CAN control and then not have to worry about what I CAN’T control. If I can have homemade french fries and be able to control the fat, then I am a happy person. PS. I have been married 27 years and have never made homemade french fries because I don’t have a deep fat fryer and don’t plan on buying on. But the T-Fal may be the answer to my prayers.

I am a registered dietitian that provides feeding therapy to children who eat a very limited variety due to various reasons. This would be a great tool to take on my home visits when we do cooking projects. The child(ren) can help me prepare the food and then we can safely “fry” it for a healthy new food/snack/meal option. Currently I use a skillet when needed. But recently came across several kid friendly recipes that are fried. I try to make healthy, flavorful foods for my therapy sessions.

My husband loves fried chicken & so do I, but our tummies, now that we are in our 40’s do not! Neither does my cholesterol level–Dr.s can be so picky :)…this would be a great way to help us have a favorite & make everyone happy & healthier!!

I have been SO interested in this machine, and it’s great to see a review of it by real people. So, it really is what it seems to be. I’d so much like to win it. My husband probably would never know and he could eat some of those foods that I don’t usually make for him now.

I got a deep fryer for my birthday three yrs ago. I love using it. I make my own version of chicpotles chips. and buffalo wings and poroges for the kids. I would like to have a fryer that does not need all the oil. The oil part makes a big mess and it is not cheap. when of course you use the good oil. I am following you on pinterest and twitter. and facebook..;)

My kids are big chicken strip lovers! I would love to make homemade chicken strips and have them turn out nice and crispy without all the extra fat! It’s also a lot safer than a hot skillet full of oil with little ones around!

I’m trying to eat as healthy as I can and model healthy eating for my children. I don’t want them to grow up with the same food struggles that I’ve had. This looks like an awesome way to eat yummy friend foods in a healthier fashion. Awesome giveaway!

  174. Kelly R. says:

I never fry anything and would love something that lets us eat some lightly fried foods without too much fat. I remember the days when my mom kept a fryer full of oil in the bottom of our pantry!

  175. Natalie says:

I think this is a fabulous product – real french fries with only 1TB of oil, amazing! Trying to lose weight and lower cholesterol by healthy eating! Shared on FB, tweeted on Twitter, following on Pinterest. Thanks for all that you do!

How awesome! I am a country girl with a spastic colon and anextremey health conscious husband. This would be the perfect solution!

  180. Cindy says:

I would love to try this. I have always wanted a fryer, but I didn’t want to “knowingly” prepare unhealthy food for my family. I was never able to justify the purchase. I would love to try making sweet potatoe fries and broccoli cheese balls for my kids, and for myself! I’ve been really trying to cook healthier for my children and family this year, and I’ve been doing a great job of incorporating healthy and fresh foods while trying to eliminate eating out as much. I think that this “fryer” would make a nice edition to my kitchen and the children would have a lot of fun making new and exciting foods to try (the broccoli cheese balls!)

My daughter loves French Fries, and to be able to make them at home (save money) and with less oil (yay healthy!) would be amazing!

  182. Maria says:

We currently use our Turkey fryer to fry most foods. Talk about to much oil!

I am trying to cut back on fat in my family just so that our five kids can grow up to be healthy. We all LOVE fried foods & we’re always looking for great ways to make them healthier!

  185. Jennifer Lyons says:

    I retweeted the contest.

  186. Jennifer Lyons says:

I would love to have this fryer because although I am an RD, an athlete, and a healthy eater, I still have high cholesterol because of a strong family history. Cutting the fat will help keep it in check and help me to give my kids better health to prevent them from having to battle high cholesterol as well.

  187. I’d love to win this appliance!!!

Between home (3 kids, working mom) and my job as a Cooperative Extension agent where I teach hundreds of parents and kids each year, this would come in handy.

All of my lessons combine nutrition with local foods messages and cooking techniques. This would be a great tool. At home, my kids would LOVE making healthy fried, etc–and eating them.
